054 Forêt DesCartes. Re-Enacting Words and Things.
Scenography of the Forêt DesCartes at DE SINGEL in Antwerp. (Slope to the ‘expoplein’)
Curatorial project and scenography: Filippo Cattapan, Malgorzata Maria Olchowska and Atelier Oh
The images and quotes in the Forêt DesCartes exhibition were collected and compiled by students of the second master's degree in architecture at Hasselt University's Faculty of Architecture and Art.
Participating studio's:
Studio Degrowth (tutors Eef Boeckx, Jo Berben);
Studio Plaperi (tutor Jo Janssen, Guy Cleuren);
Seminar Genius Loci (prof. Koenraad Van Cleempoel).
In the spirit of Christian Kieckens' pedagogy, students were asked to collect this material as a visual context for their master's project. Within his teaching assignment at the graduate studio in Antwerp, Christian asked his students to do this annually in an exercise he called 'Words and Things'. Through the exercise, Kieckens taught them to seek harmony between their own design and the inexhaustible wealth of art and architectural historical references. The students were given the opportunity to place their work within a broader cultural horizon. This also allowed them to build a coherent discourse around their design, embedded in the historical tradition of the discipline.
Workshop at Z33.
